Moving into China via Hong Kong

A HongKong's role in U.S.-China Trade

HongKong, with approximately six million people, has in the past 30 years built itself into a major U.S. trading partner. In addition, its integral relationship with mainland China has proved to be immensely valuable in helping U.S. and other international businesses to enter the emerging China Market.

There are approximately 25,000 U.S. citizens currently residing in Hong Kong and they represent one of the most significant foreign presences. In addition, 12 States including California, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Wisconsin, "have established representative offices in Hong Kong.

For U.S. businesses, Hong Kong's unparallelled access to the Chinese mainland provides a unique gateway to the China Market, the world's largest untapped market. This is well demonstrated by the huge increase in trade between the
U. S. and China in recent years.

There are two important Hong Kong trade organizations in the U.S.:

1. The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC):

HKTDC is a quasi-official trade organization which offers a multitude of business services designed to help U.S. companies to enter the China Market. In addition to providing extensive market intelligence, it also assists businesses in identifying trade partners and pinpointing distribution channels. U.S. companies interested in doing business with China are encouraged to make use of the Council's extensive market information.
